Along the river
Discover the countryside around the river Gein where Piet Mondrian loved to paint and draw between 1900 and 1908.
Landzicht farm was situated by a bend in the river Gein, half obscured by tall trees, surrounded by a classic Dutch polder landscape. The scene attracted Piet Mondrian, and he painted and drew it several times around 1905. Neither the old farm nor its distinctive stand of trees remains today.
The Amsterdam photographer Jacob Olie, known for his many scenes of the capital, had depicted Landzicht farm and its distinctive setting in 1900. Olie, like Mondrian, had a keen sense of composition, so it was no surprise that his eye was caught by the same view of the farm in the trees by the bend in the river. We do not know if Mondrian was familiar with Olie’s photograph.
Mondrian placed much less emphasis on the farmhouse, which can hardly be seen in some of the works, than on the striking clump of trees and their reflection in the water; see, for instance, Landzicht Farm Under Unclouded Blue Sky, Landzicht Farm with Mirror Reflection in Water and Landzicht Farm with Reflection in the Water.
