De Hoge Hil, Domburg

I painted en plein air from the highest dune in Domburg.

The Hoge Hil, Domburg’s tallest dune, offers glorious views of the village, the beach, the dunes and the sea. From here, in a few glances, you can see the Zeeland Piet Mondrian painted and drew – the dunes, sea and breakwaters as well as the characteristic architecture, from the Domburg windmill to the Oostkapelle church tower, standing out as vertical elements against the vast landscape.

Sea After Sunset

Mondrian liked coming up here, whether to work or simply to sit and enjoy the view. In the summer of 1909, he painted Sea After Sunset on cardboard en plein air on the Hoge Hil. Mondrian’s friend Albert van den Briel, who visited him for a few weeks that summer, saw him working on the painting as night fell.

Mondrian also must have painted Seascape, By the Sea, and View from the Dunes with Beach and Piers, Domburg here on the Hoge Hil that year, using his brushstrokes to achieve a different effect in each work.

By the seaside

Piet Mondrian likes to visit Domburg. The dunes, the sea, the bright light, they are all still the same. This walk takes you past the most beautiful places in Domburg and shows the seaside resort as Mondrian saw it.
